About Liars’ League NYC

Liars League NYC is a live literary journal featuring professionally trained actors reading original short stories by both emerging and well-established writers. Selected stories are published on our website, performed in front of a live audience at New York’s celebrated KGB Bar every other month, and podcast via the iTunes Store and Stitcher.

Our aim is simple - to bring the very best new fiction to life in front of what we think is one the most discerning literary audiences in the world.

How it works

We welcome submissions of fresh, thought-provoking, and emotionally engaging short fiction between 800 and 3000 words long. Each of our events is themed, and you can find more details about our themes and respective deadlines on our submissions page.

Once we've read through all the stories, we take a selection of the best and cast an actor to read each one. Writers then have the opportunity to rehearse with their actor prior to the event itself – though if you're not local, you can just give us your thoughts in terms of direction. After the event, we’ll publish your story here on the site, together with a podcast and photos from the night.

Where it happens

Liars’ League NYC is recorded live at the East Village’s famed KGB Bar, the well-loved home of literary events and readings in New York since 1980, on the first Wednesday of every other month - you'll find a full list of events right here. Entry is free - but you might want to come early to make sure you get a seat.

Friends and neighbors

As well as our own events, we also take part in events all over New York City. In the past, we've participated in the Brooklyn Book Festival in DUMBO, as part of Lit Crawl NYC in the East Village and Cobble Hill, as well as in Bushwick Open Pages.

We've also teamed up with our friends at GRANTA, Guernica, and the BBC to bring stories to life - and we're always excited to forge new partnerships. So if you're interested in working with us, why not get in touch?

Liars around the world

As well as New York, Liars’ League holds regular events in London, Portland, and Hong Kong. Each Liars’ League has different events, themes, and deadlines - and all are free to submit to.

London is where it all began. Liars’ League London has been going since 2007, and is now one of London's most popular literary events. London events take place on the second Tuesday of every month, downstairs at The Phoenix, just off Oxford Circus. Kick-off is at 7.30pm, and tickets are a mere £5 on the door. Naturally, you'll find more details about Liars’ League London on their website, together with a separate archive of over 300 stories for everyone to enjoy and download for free.

Portland, Oregon is home to the newest member of the Liars' League family. Liars' League PDX held their first event at The Studio at Literary Arts in downtown Portland in 2016 - you can find out more about their schedule and submissions themes on their website

Liars' League Hong Kong held their first event in 2013. You'll find out more about them on their website.
